We are planning a home birth. Please consider making a donation to our birth fund. Every little bit helps! Thank you so much.
A friend of mine recently invited me over to her house for a “Makeover Your Medicine Cabinet” event. We learned how you can use essential oils as homeopathic remedies for a variety of health concerns and how those remedies can quickly replace a medicine cabinet full of toxic over-the-counter and prescription drugs. This appealed to me especially, because we are about to have our first child, and I know a lot of parents with children who are constantly sick with flu, colds, ear infections, stomach bugs — you name it; they’ve probably contracted it. And many of those children aren’t in germ-infested daycares or other environments, so it makes you wonder why they keep getting sick. The friend who invited me over has an almost-4-year-old who has never had an ear infection and very rarely gets sick with a cold or the flu. This little girl has never even been to a doctor. Ever. That made me want to pay attention for sure.
Why Opt for Natural Health Remedies?
Jereme and I have long been on the outskirts of the “crunchy granola” club of folks who eat organic foods and use all-natural remedies to combat sickness. Now that we’re having a home birth, I guess we’re officially part of the inner circle. But I assure you, we aren’t making these decisions to be part of some cool hipster club. We’re making them because we honestly feel that they’re the best decisions for our health and for the health of our kids.
Over-the-counter and prescription medications don’t cure illnesses; they merely mask symptoms. It’s like putting a band-aid on a wound. Your immune system is what does the healing when you have a wound. A band-aid just covers it up so you can’t see it. Not to mention, most medications are nothing more than synthetically produced chemical versions of stuff that’s found in nature. They come with a host of side-effects that oftentimes can be worse than the illness you’re dealing with in the first place.
Why subject yourself to a bunch of chemical, synthetic versions of the stuff that God created to nourish and heal the bodies he designed and gave us to care for during our time here? I feel that when we do this, we’re pretty much telling God that we can do it better than Him. And He, in his perfect wisdom, leaves us to our own devices, which usually results in negative consequences that we have to deal with later. On the other hand, when we use natural remedies, we’re putting our trust in God and acknowledging the goodness of His creation — the results of which are always better.
Natural remedies often work slower than synthetic drugs. That’s because synthetic drugs work quickly to mask symptoms, but they don’t actually get to the root of the problem.
When we opt for synthetic drugs, we may not have to suffer as much, but we’re wreaking havoc on our immune system by putting things into our bodies that they weren’t designed to consume. Synthetic antibiotics, for example, destroy your body’s beneficial bacteria, along with killing the bad stuff, which weakens your immunity overall. And bacteria eventually build up a resistance to medications, so you have to take stronger doses the next time around. If you get caught in this cycle, synthetic antibiotics will eventually stop working for you altogether.
With natural remedies, we might have to suffer a little more, but that’s because we aren’t masking the symptoms. We’re actually getting to the root of the problem and boosting our immune system so that it can do its job more effectively.
I’ve said this a million times, and I’ll keep saying it: #GodKnewWhatHeWasDoing (Click to Tweet).
Essential oils are one of the natural health practices we’ve recently decided to adopt, along with good organic nutrition, medication-free childbirth, exercise and abundant chemical-free water consumption. I purchased four different oils at the event: lavender, peppermint, lemon and melaleuca (also known as tea tree oil). We’ve been using the oils for a couple of weeks now and it’s amazing how much use we’ve gotten from them. They are good for so many different things, whether you’re pregnant or not, but I’m going to outline some ways I’ve used them to cope with some of the normal symptoms of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Symptom: Acne | Solution: Melaleuca
I had really bad acne during my first trimester, so it’s too bad I hadn’t discovered the magic of this essential oil at that time. But I’ve been using it on my face for the last two weeks and it’s done wonders for me. I have a few dark spots and acne scars that have faded with each use, as well as a few new pimples pop up between then and now that have completely cleared within two days. I also started using face wash that contains melaleuca and other essential oils, so I’m sure that’s helping as well.
Pregnancy Symptom: Constipation | Solution: Peppermint and/or Lemon Oil
I’ve struggled with constipation since the beginning, and I think we can all agree: it’s not fun. The essential oils book that came with my kit suggested massaging my abdomen with lemon oil and peppermint oil, so I tried it, and it definitely helped. You can also put lemon oil in your water instead of squeezing lemons, which is super convenient when you’re at a restaurant and don’t want to bug your waitress for extra wedges. Just a few drops of the pure essential oil, and it tastes great. Lemon’s detoxifying effect is not only good for constipation; it’s great for your immune system, too, so for pregnant women, who are more prone to illness, it’s a fantastic way to stay healthy.
Pregnancy Symptom: Nausea | Solution: Peppermint Oil
I haven’t been nauseous much during this pregnancy. I only get sick and throw up if I wait too long to eat. Last week, though, I did have a small bout of nausea, so I inhaled the scent from the peppermint oil bottle, and it held me over until I was able to heat up some food.
Pregnancy Symptom: Swelling | Solution: Lavender Oil
Swelling for me has been mild, which is normal. Just a little in my ankles and feet. Elevating my feet and drinking lots of water definitely helps. When I combined these solutions with a few drops of lavender oil, massaged directly on the areas of concern, it worked wonders.
Pregnancy Symptom: Insomnia | Solution: Lavender Oil
Lavender oil has a wonderful calming effect that helps me fall asleep, and when I massage it onto my palms and the bottoms of my feet before bed, I sleep hard. I expected to have trouble sleeping during my third trimester because I’m so huge, but I’ve had some of the best sleep I’ve ever had in these last few weeks.
Pregnancy Symptom: Fatigue | Solution: Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is incredibly invigorating. A lot of people use it as a massage oil to ease tension and soothe aching muscles. I put one drop under my tongue and it clears my stuffy nose right up. Recently I read online that you can put a few drops into the floor of a hot shower and inhale the steam to help you wake up, so I tried it and, O…M…G… I did not want to get out of the shower. It smelled amazing, and my sinuses cleared within seconds. I did it at night and it was so refreshing. I’m sure if I tried it in the morning, I’d become a morning person very quickly.
Which Brand of Essential Oils is Best?
Not all essential oils are created equal. You want to make sure the oils you buy are pure, with no fillers or chemicals, and trust me – you can smell the difference! The oils I bought are from a company called Young Living. All of their oils are Pure Therapeutic Grade, and you can even ingest them. That’s something a lot of other companies can’t claim.
These oils are good for so many things, it can be very overwhelming when you’re just getting started. In the interest of not overwhelming my readers, I’ll stop here for now, but stay tuned for a Part 2 of sorts, where I’ll discuss the use of essential oils for labor and childbirth. I’ll wait until Indie arrives to write that one. 🙂
For now, you can get any of the oils I mentioned, and more, from the Young Living website. Simply visit this link and you can either enroll as a retail customer, or as a wholesale member to get discounted pricing on essential oils. I do get rewarded for any referrals I make and would greatly appreciate you entering my member ID as the person who referred you: 1875586.
If you have any questions about how to use the oils or which oils to buy for your specific concerns, send me an e-mail. I’d love to hear from you!
